I’m a sophmore in high school, and I’d like to learn to play the bass (electric, not upright) before I go to college, starting this summer. I’m planning to teach myself, but my question is this: I have an acoustic guitar, but I never learned to play really, so would it be a good idea to start by trying to learn guitar first, or would it be faster (with little to no detriment in my playing ability) to just go straight to learning bass?
Start with the bass. But you should learn some basic chords on the guitar, like D, A and C in major.
The four deepest strings on a guitar is the same as the strings on a bass guitar. Actually, you can use your acoustic guitar to play bass. I used to do that for a year before I bought my own bass.
On a bass, you don’t need to worry about major/minor or things like that because you can’t play this. You can use this link that I found for you at the internet: http://www.squidoo.com/Learntoplaybassguitar . If not: learn to play bass guitar . You can find some tabs to start with and play songs you like on: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/search.php? . This will help you to start learning to play the bass. To start playing guitar is just to make a detour!
Some other answers says that bass is much easier than guitar. I wouldn’t say that. If you’re a beginner, bass is easier – yes. But if you are a pro, bass is more improvisation.

The bass is much easier to play.

I started playing guitar when I was 5 years old after watching my mom play.
learning the guitar will help with learning the bass because they are so similar. I have also heard that the fingerings are similar.
You might also be able to get a scholarship if you know both. The most instruments you know, the better for collage.

I’m trying to learn to play the guitar, and it’s harder than it looks. The bass is so much easier then guitar. But I like things that are difficult so. Yeah If you want to play the guitar it’s a good idea. But if you can get your hands on a Bass then do it. Your welcome

There is no need to learn guitar before you learn bass. If you like the bass start with it. That’s what I did.

Playing bass for about 17 yrs.
My suggestion: learn both. Guitar first, get the basics down. Chords and chord structure, progressions, flat pick techniques, notes if you want. The transition to bass is much easier and the biggest advantage I’ve found is when you jam, you can recognize the chords and progressions played and know where to finger your bass. Bass players are in bigger demand than guitar players. When I jam I play bass because no one else can. Bass holds everything together. But I recommend learning both.
Hope this helps

Plays bass-guitar in a band. Love the guitar too! I’ve got one bass and two guitars.
i would go straight to bass, but if you dont have a bass at this time then a guitar will definately help your left hand and your tone recognition
plus if you learn the basic scales (pentatonic, etc) you can transfer them to the bass

I would recomend starting on bass instead of guitar because it is the same, but the strumming is different and is harder to master on a bass
