VERDICT !!!!!! after almost 2 years, here are my thoughts : Martins are just great . sound is royal and big. deep bass sometimes too deep. craftsmanship tops the Gibson. the one thing that is missing is a bit more soul. not enough mid range to make a bit more complex and woody The J-45 GOT that woody tone that makes you so mellow and relaxed when played . the Recording is really easy , no matter how you record this guitar it sounds like a dream . I cannot say the same for the HD28 – the loud bass and low mid need more attention when you want to record it. short scale and very middy sound are making the J-45 a string EATER . a set of strings can sound great on an HD28 for a month when the J45 sounds dead after 2 weeks . hell just get them both… there is really no other way

@themaninme dude, you are so wrong.

I have to agree with you: I love them both, I own them both sometimes I play the Gibby sometimes the Martin either way I’m happy

  3. onetime188 says:

@OpikX look for a Yamaha compass handcrafted, especially the CPX15SA (south), it blows either one of these out of the water, and you can find them used for $800.00

I’ve never played a martin I liked, I’ve picked up some J-45s that were brilliant though. Regardless Martin and Gibson are the harley davidson of guitars i.e. overpriced noisemakers, it might be a good guitar but you’re paying for the name/logo on it, and there are a lot of guitars out there that sound better for half the price.

    What about the hd-35???

  5. bluegrasssingingman says:

@olihp3 no only if the Gibson is 30 years old. And I haven’t heard many that I liked even if they was that old with age.

@namjah no just down right dumb

  7. CKYZZIE says:

To my ears, definately Martin on the fingerpicking! Crisp, clear notes! Flat picking is CLOSE, but deeper resonance to Martin! I might be partial to the sound of the D-28 because I’ve owned one since 1975. I tried not to let that have any bearing on what my ears were hearing, though. Not sure if I was successful. hahaha!

  8. sanders4617 says:

Martin seems to have more clarity to me.. or richness. They both have their cons and pros though. I tend to like Martin’s a tad more.. but I like Gibson’s as well. Taylor’s are too thin sounding for me though.

strange… a Gibson guitar costs more ore less the same as a martin guitar of the same grade.
    didnt understand you comment.
maybe you thought the are not good enough to be priced the way they do
in that case I disagree . they are just as good . they just sound very special very middy and not all people understand the benefits of that.

  14. mcneely2818 says:

I might have purchased a gibson, but most of their acoustic and electric guitars are overpriced. I was able to get an sg standard a while back, and it is a great, obviously legendary guitar, but not worth the price tag to me. I now own a d-28 (not vintage), and it is pretty much everything I expected, and I am more than happy. Still pricey, though.

  15. MrPaolo101 says:

    Nicely played!
Im guessing this ones gonna go on for some time…but..for me, i looked at these two models when i wanted a guitar i could get old with…
The 28 just seemed a little more ‘articulate’, both are great…but i came home with a martin.

  16. MrMuccio says:

    very great playing!!

  17. palmeiraster says:

Gibson sounds more musical and i have a vintage D28…

  18. LelouchLamperouge019 says:

Wow, the Gibson is THROWN AWAY, compared to the Martin.

  19. CE750 says:

@themaninme yeah, I tend to agree, barring using a D18 or pre-war 28, the Gibson beats the Martin in volume hands down ….

  20. CE750 says:

There is nothing nicer than the sound of a pre-war Martin D series, but with that not being possible for most ($100K+) .. the D28, 41, 42 and 45′s are just great!

  21. OleBlues says:

Sorry you don’t like your Taylor….Buy a Martin DUDE!!!!

  22. jdmarcus59 says:

hd28 is more warm and bassey, i have HD28 and taylor 410, and my martin just blows it out of the water.

  23. SalveUa says:

i think that both guitars r good :)
ps. u playing not bad.. very not bad :D

  24. flatpick60 says:

I like both sounds, however the Gibson J-45 has a shorter scale then the Martin which would make the Gibson a little easier to play and bend strings but would give a slight edge to volume with the Martin, then again a Gibson Advanced jumbo has a normal scale and in my opinion would edge out the Martin in Volume, just my opinion, I have played them all!

  25. aconk99 says:

on guitarcenter it says that the j-45 is an acoustic elctric. is that optional? or only a specific model? i kinda just want that barebones acoustic with nothing else. plus if electrics will up the price, then that really sucks. and that is some incredible playing around 2:13. your a great guitarist.
