    Yes, march1959 is correct. Playing next to (but not on the fret) will produce the clearest note possible along with coming down on the note perpendicularly with the finger.

    I think no, but It will be easier. I started with an accoustic guitar. Bass is much easier to start after you played on a 6 string accoustic before.

    u can mute it with either hand to get rid of the note, it depends on ur bass though tbh, but if its a slow moving track on high notes then use ur right hand. if its fast use ur left between the intervals, practice makes perfect!

    Muting notes this way does not work for me all the time. E.g. after fretting 12th fret instead of muting the string the harmonic is ringing out.

    Is there a consistent way to mute the string independent of the fret?

    yeah mate, what you are doing is a pull off, and actually a valid technique (if that is what you are going for) But to stop that happening you need to mute the string, or stop it from ringing, with either your right palm or one of your strumming fingers

    well you can place your hand slightly on the strings near the bridge(opposite end of the tuning pegs) you will get a muted sound from this but some people cant play like that so you can also do what c4rdsh4rk said but try to get the string to be in its open position with your finger slightly on it, hope this helped
