Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers questions from off of his Guitar Blog website…
Q #1). Ive been playing guitar for about a year and three months and just dont know everything that should be a part of my practice routine.
I practice pentatonic scales, and the major scale. I mostly have a decent understanding of modes, and one or two patterns of the harmonic minor scale.
I also practice notation, but I have a problem focusing long enough to get good at it. I learn new songs from time to time and Im interested in just about every style of music.
I want to know what my practice schedule should consist of to be a complete guitarist.

Q #2). Ive noticed a pattern in my guitar learning. I will progress in waves, but when I am at a low then things are slow and it makes it difficult to stay motivated.
Any suggestions?
I have been playing for around 5 years, so I am not a beginner. But my guitars are still beginner guitars – would a better guitar help my learning curve?

Q #3). I have been playing bass guitar for around 4 years now. I feel I have reached a plateau. I need help with improvising, playing bass runs and fills, how to incorporate a scale in a song on bass, etc. Overall, Id like to spice it up a little bit so that Im not playing only the root notes.
Thanks for all your help!

How do you find a good teacher, I’ve had 5 and havnt been to happy. I’m resigned to learning on my own but it is daunting. Teachers either don’t want to help with what I wantor just shotgun and hop from tune to tune, no logical progression or musical connection. Seems anyone that can play thinks they can teach. Teaching is as much an art as playing. I think I should find a good English teacher and give them my mel bay book for a month and start paying them.
