I use standards, mainly because I don’t want to lose the rounder tone I like for finger style. It’s worth experimenting with different gauges though and if the light strings feel good, then they’re right for you. In terms of your thumb getting caught; try reducing the movement of your thumb to the minimum to sound the notes and then build on speed gradually.

What gauge string do you use? I am using mediums maybe medheavy and my thumb always gets caught. I was thinking of switching to super lights (rotosound funkmasters). Think this would help me?

I,ve got a cheapo Johnson whoknowswhat electric bass and have been self teaching myself for a couple of years. I got the slap then pop with my fingers but I never get the second slap with my thumb. I feel like the play on my strings are totally different then what I hear with most slap players. The strings on your bass seem even all the way down.
