FYI – the gear i was using in the above videos is as follows:
* OLP Musicman Stingray clone – These should be around $250 AUD or about $150USD.
* Marshall 30w guitar amplifier (it wasn’t even a bass amp).
When i play live i use an Ibanez sr300 (active). It has a super low action (how high/low the strings are from the fretboard), a Peavey Tour 700 head and a Behringer quad box.

Good question. I remember when i first started teaching myself i wondered if there was some special kind of bass designed for slap. And the answer: Not really.
Slap can be played effectively on a regular bass. It is just a matter of finding a tone and eq setting (on your amp) that suits the sound you’re looking for.
There are some basses that are designed customer for slap players (usually expensive), but it can be done perfectly well on a normal bass.

they then go onto play some 3 minute funk oddessy and say :”now you try”.

Thanks a lot Johnny! I never thought to just leave my thumb at a natural angle. Makes a huge difference and I can go between slapping and just playing SO much easier now.
Bass can really work your hands over and this tip alone lets me do the mostest with the leastest as they say.
