Sadly, I speak from a wealth of personal experience and transgression :)

    It really depends …
It really depends on what kind of music you like to play. Like you say, it’s important to not be selfish and try to steal the show, but if the music is comin out and you can hold the groove, be exciting! Not ALL the time, but if you feel it I think it’s good to do a nice fill or something. It’s all self-expression too so it really depends what suits the band and you.

    Yeah, the thought …
Yeah, the thought of subbing for Cliff Williams at an AC/DC gig is a total knee-shaker. The fans alone would make you pay for ruining the groove, much less the band. There’s a LOT to learn from that guy.

lovely piece of slap and pop there. nice and crisp. slap myself but fter slapping top string lower strings seem to be almost inaudible only the pop comes through and too much popping weakens the tune i think.

Hi. Thanks for watching. I completely agree in that, if you’re on stage in front of a crowd, then you’re there to entertain the crowd– and not yourself as a player. I’ve heard it said well in that, If the crowd applauds, THEN you’re “good”–not if you can flawlessly execute a a one-handed, 3 octave, tapped arpeggio. Cliff Williams plays what the song needs. He plays what he should, instead of what he could… I can’t say I always did, and that’s why this vid. Again, thx for watching.

give me break buddy! have you ever played live rock and roll, i think not, you’d be better off in a studio playin a seinfeld episode. sorry i disagree, the more energy the better, and if it means what you call overplaying and your on stage and the crowd is rockin, then that’s a good thing, ub

    I like your …
I like your pespective about the role of the bass. Sure, we can expand our own expression of what we play, and the flashy bass work. But we can groove and add the low end.

  23. ubertuber57 says:

    Lol. Thanks. I am …
Lol. Thanks. I am contantly faced with how much I over-do things and take away from, rather than add-to the song.

    since you already play guitar…
Prescription: Take 2 AC/DC songs; record guitar and bass parts with metronome/drums on 4-track/etc; listen to results and repeat process as needed. :D (Gimme a bullet and ain’t a bad place to be are good starters.)

    Seriously, thanks for watching!

  24. matamisnaman says:

    This video is very …
This video is very important! I am recording bass right now and am starting to see how I am totally over doing EVERYTHING. I am coming from a guitar background so it is hard for me to just groove and not over do it… excuses aside. Thanks for the info/inspiration!

  25. ubertuber57 says:

    These are some …
These are some stainless steel DR Hi-Beams (40-60-80-100) If the bass sounds extra bright and crisp, some of that may be due to the piezo pickup that’s blended with the humbucker on the bass. Music Man has a nice piezo system from the factory.

It’s also a direct recording, instead of through an amp, so that helps a bit too.

    Thanks for watching!
