Been trying to get that slap sound down recently, but my thumb keeps muting the string. I guess it’s a matter of practice..

PS could you do a focus on the pop technique? The slap seems obvious, also the dead notes are a bit of a mistery. Mine keep coming out sounding odd.

JBass, thanks for this. I’m actually a lead guitarist going on 23 yrs now, but I want to get these bass techniques down as I think decent bass players are more in demand. Just got my bass today, so I’m pretty excited right now LOL.

I have a 24-fret bass with J-pickups. I’ve seen a few people slap on it, but I seem to be getting a harmonic half of the time. Either I’m accidentally muting the string or slapping in the wrong place.

What should I do? How hard do I slap and pop without breaking the strings easily?

    I have a gear …
I have a gear question: I play a Carvin B4 bass, all standard features. While I have no problems with any other playing style, I can’t seem to slap very well with it. I suspect it has something to do with the string action, because I don’t have these problems on other guitars, but adjusting it doesn’t help either. Is it possible that some bass models are not “made for slapping”? I just get this horrible string buzz and distortion. Are my strings too heavy? confused…

this is the first exercise in “the slap bass bible”. my bass teacher let me borrow it to flip through and its amazing i highly recommend getting it. theres tons of awesome grooves that help your reading and technique and none of it is tedious or boring like alot of books designed to help you improve sight reading. this book is helping me a great deal and it comes with a cd too, so you can just pop it in and look around until you find a groove you like and learn it.
    thanks anthony!
