Kirby Pagunsan – The Nutcracker Suite

Hey guys,

Thanks for checking out my rendition of “The Nutcracker Suite”!

This is something I like to do every year around Christmas time; I would record my own rendition of a Xmas song and send it out to all my friends and family. I was always fascinated with audio recording and started to teach myself a few years back. This is my way of gauging myself and seeing how much I’ve improved over time.

To see my last year’s “Christmas Medley”, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpSydp2b2SE

I included the songs “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, “March”, “Waltz of the Flowers”, and “Trepak/Russian Dance”, as well my own material to spice it up a bit. Hope you guys enjoy!

There are lots of ways to strike the strings on your bass to get different sound. Pulling with your fingers, using a pick, and using your thump to slap the bass and pulling your fingers up from underneath the strings to pop them. The slap and pop techniques are a fun way to get that unique sound, so in this segment Ill show you the basic techniques needed to play in this style. When slapping, the idea is to hit the string from the top/side and with your thumb and then to get it away so that the strings can freely vibrate. When popping, youve got to learn to use your wrist to open up your hand, and by doing so have your fingers pop the strings to get that sounds. We end with a couple of exercises using octaves in an E minor pentatonic scale and introduce the bounce technique to get a double hit with your thumb.

Micro Stack (Ghetto)

Hey what I did was take my first amp, a terrible Kustom bass amp, and a Peavy bass amp. A week ago I thought to myself, “Hey, this Digitech pedal can be plugged into two amps. Hmm…” Turns out that the setup of the effects on the pedal board and the EQ on the amps created a magnificant tone that it just sucked me into playing it. Using your resources can have a very positive outcome, eh?

Oh, check out my other videos and my clash profile JarrettBourney, who I’m sharing with my friend jbjrrocks in order to start a band (maybe). My buddy, who is a guitar/bass player like myself, is coming over for a few days, so expect some Rush/Metallica/Megadeth covers!

If you learn to play the acoustic guitar, do you need to start all over again to learn the bass?

I plan to learn how to play the acoustic guitar but I want to play other guitars, mostly the bass and funk guitar. Do you need to learn all over again? How different, except for structure and sound are guitars?

Not very different at all. The main difference between an acoustic guitar and an electric bass is the way that you strike the strings in the right hand. On an acoustic, you can strum with your fingers, or more commonly with a pick; on the bass, however, you generally pluck the strings upward- no "strum" is involved, usually. The left hand (or hand that’s on the guitar neck, fretting the notes), is acting on the same premises that it always does. It may take some time for your left hand to acclimate to the width and weight of the bass strings, but the techniques between guitars are very similar.

Funk guitar is slightly different: while you still strum and and fret essentially the same way, the chord shapes and rhythms involved can be considerably more complex at first glance. Essentially- they’re just harder, lol. But, to answer your question completely: all guitars are played, really, with the same faculties. You strum strings, you fret notes, and you use a variety of techniques to effect the tone or quality of the sound. Depending on the style you choose, yes, you may have to learn some new techniques (Classical and Flamingo guitar take a considerable amount of finger dexterity, for instance), but most techniques are transferable to other guitars; furthermore, every style you pick up will become easier and easier because of the similarities. You can, for instance, perform "hammer-ons" and "pull-offs" on an acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, mandolin, banjo, lute, etc, lol. Hopefully that answers some of your questions?

CIGAR BOX GUITAR LESSONS INCLUDED
CD PLAYS ON YOUR COMPUTER & CONTAINS SHEET MUSIC FILE

BOTTLENECK SLIDE GUITAR is based on an early one string folk instrument called the Diddley-Bow, and the traditional playing style of Hawaiian Guitar. The early Blues Masters of the 1920s and 30s, would place a bottleneck from a wine bottle, or a short piece of metal pipe on their finger. Using this as a slide, they could move up and down along the strings of a guitar imitating singing or the cries and moans of the human voice. This style uses an early method of tuning the guitar called open tuning, that is also used to play banjo. The guitar is tuned to a D or E chord, that actually makes it easier to learn music theory. The course starts with learning to play single note melody lines on one string. Next, by adding a second note harmony is created. Then a third note creates chords. The final song is embellished by adding strumming techniques and bottleneck slide.

THIS CD WILL NOT ONLY TEACH YOU HOW TO PLAY BOTTLENECK GUITAR, BUT HOW TO CREATE AND ARRANGE SONGS.

The Blues songs presented on this cd are in the style of Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Tommy Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Howlin’ Wolf, and Muddy Waters .Traditional Country Gospel songs are also taught because they were a major influence in the development of the Blues.

Plays on your PC or MAC (software that supports Windows media required). Video in .WMA format. Use Windows media player, Winamp (free download online), etc. Almost 2 hours long.

***VIDEO LESSON SERIES 2 SPANISH TUNING OPEN G and A
The Blues songs presented on this CD are intended to help the student explore the fingerboard of a Spanish tuned (Open G) guitar. Spanish Fandango, a turn of the century parlor guitar piece is taught to improve right hand picking technique. A detailed study of a typical 12 bar Blues progression offers endless possibilities for creativity. Two classic Mississippi Delta Blues songs, Walking Blues and Rollin’ and Tumblin’ are also presented for further study.
